In this Commentary in Cancer Cell, the author discuss the main successes and caveats in the establishment of tumor organoids derived from hepatobiliary tumors. So far, the establishment rate has been around 20% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) organoids (HCCO) and around 40% for cholangiocarcinoma (CAA) organoids (CAAO).  Furthermore, HCCOs were established from moderately- or poorly-differentiated tumors but not from well-differentiated tumors, indicating that differentiation state is an important contributor to tumor organoid establishment. The authors also provide bulletpoints to improve tumor organoid establishment and use.
