Cell cycle deregulation is a hallmark of cancer that involves aberrant activity of cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK)-cyclin protein complexes. Tomás-Loba et al. demonstrate in a recent article in Nature that p38 MAPK gamma can act as a CDK regulating entry into the cell cycle. Similar to other CDKs, p38γ induces proliferation by inactivating tumour suppressor retinoblastoma. p38γ is a novel therapeutic target for a large subset of HCC patients that overexpress p38γ.
